Spotlight on….

I think it’s well documented by now that we just love to shout about how great our community are. Be they instructors, staff, or students, we think they are all great and we want you to know about it. This week we’re talking to Katherine about how she came to GA, what she likes about it and what advice she’d give future students.

What were you doing before GA?

I was a Global Digital Marketing Manager at an Ad Tech company called Unruly and during that time I did the 1 week Marketing intensive with General Assembly which was amazing. A lot of things in marketing are self taught or you’re running a million miles an hour to get things off the ground so it was incredible to have a week to validate my line of thinking and also take a step back on digital marketing holistically. I felt 100 times more confident in my role. I decided to leave that role to go cycling and hiking around Europe. I’m from New Zealand and I really had the craving to get out and see some of Europe slowly and in an environmentally friendly way. I also wanted to take a break between roles as I do love my work and I put so much energy and passion into so it’s nice to have a break and re-energise. Of course I was massively luckily able to do that.

Tell me three things you love about your role at GA?

I love seeing the students get excited about their projects and that ‘aha’ moment when they’ve come to the solutions themselves. I like prodding them to make them think and seeing the satisfaction when they’re excited to get going. My favourite thing is seeing their marketing come to fruition even months after the course. I really love learning and in this space you’re always learning. Tech is forever changing so even though I’m aiding the students to learn its great to grow with the programmes.

What do you like about GA?

I like the collaborative environment and that you’re trusted to do your role well. Everyone at GA brings an amazing skill and they are always there to help. In great companies there’s always an incredible energy you feel from people and they make a stand for issues that matter. It’s important to believe in the brand yourself

One piece of advice you’d give to the students?

Done is better than perfect (absolutely not my quote but I’ll hand it out where necessary).
